Going on your first Tanzania safari is an experience like no other — but a little preparation goes a long way. Here's what our guides wish every first-time visitor knew before they drove into the bush.
Clothing: What to Wear
- Neutral colours: Khaki, olive, tan and brown. Avoid bright colours and white — they spook wildlife and attract insects.
- Layers: Mornings on the open plains can be cold (10–15°C); midday reaches 28–32°C. A fleece for early drives and a light shirt for the afternoon.
- Long sleeves and trousers: Sun and mosquito protection, especially at dusk.
- Comfortable walking shoes: For bush walks and camp.
- Wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
Game Drive Etiquette
- Stay in the vehicle at all times unless your guide says otherwise.
- Keep noise to a minimum — especially when predators are close.
- Do not feed wildlife under any circumstances.
- Follow your guide's instructions exactly — they read animal behaviour for your safety.
- Do not litter in the parks — pack everything out.
Photography Tips
- Golden hours (6–8 AM and 5–7 PM) give the best light for wildlife photography.
- A telephoto lens (300mm+) is ideal for distant subjects.
- Use burst mode for fast-moving action — predator hunts and birds in flight.
- Bring extra memory cards and batteries — charging points are limited in the bush.
- A beanbag window mount is excellent for stable shots from the vehicle.
Health & Safety
- Malaria prophylaxis: Tanzania is a malaria zone. Consult your doctor before travel.
- Sun protection: SPF 50+ sunscreen, re-applied hourly in open vehicles.
- Hydration: Drink at least 3 litres of water daily on safari.
- Travel insurance: Essential — include medical evacuation coverage.
- Vaccinations: Consult your doctor — hepatitis A, typhoid and yellow fever are commonly recommended.
Managing Expectations
Safari is not a zoo — wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. However, Tanzania's parks are among the world's finest and with our experienced guides you will have outstanding opportunities.
