Overview
The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. It is the only route that approaches from the north side, giving unique views across the Amboseli plains into Kenya. Rongai is quieter than Machame, slightly less steep, and has good rainfall shelter on the northern side during the long rains season.
Tour Highlights
- Unique north-side approach with Kenya views
- Quieter than Machame — more remote feeling
- Better shelter during rains season
- Moderate gradient on lower slopes
- Crosses the spectacular saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi
- Good for less confident altitude trekkers
