The Machame Route — known as the 'Whisky Route' — is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro, and for good reason. It offers superb scenery through diverse vegetation zones, an excellent acclimatisation profile with a 'climb high, sleep low' approach, and high summit success rates. At 7 days, Machame gives your body time to adapt to altitude.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Transfer to Machame Gate (1,490m). Register and begin hiking through lush rainforest. Arrive Machame Camp (3,020m). Dinner and overnight in tents.
Climb through heath and moorland. Views of the Shira Plateau open up. Arrive Shira Camp 2 (3,840m). Afternoon rest for acclimatisation.
Climb to Lava Tower (4,630m) — important for acclimatisation. Descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m). Classic 'climb high, sleep low' day.
Climb the famous Barranco Wall — a scramble with incredible views. Continue to Karanga Camp (4,035m).
Short but steep ascent to Barafu Camp (4,680m). Rest and briefing for summit night. Early dinner and sleep.
Wake at midnight. 6-7 hour ascent to Stella Point (5,756m) then Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Descend all the way to Mweka Camp (3,100m).
Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive summit certificates. Transfer back to Moshi. Celebration dinner.
