For most visitors, the Mara River crossings are the pinnacle experience. The river separates Tanzania's Northern Serengeti from Kenya's Masai Mara. Between July and October, enormous herds gather on the bank, building up courage before plunging en masse into the crocodile-patrolled waters. Crossings are unpredictable — herds may cross multiple times per day or not at all for several days. With a full week in the north, you are almost certain to witness at least one crossing.
January and February's calving season is often overlooked by visitors focused on the river crossings. But the southern Serengeti plains during calving are extraordinary — hundreds of thousands of newborn wildebeest learning to walk within minutes, with lion, cheetah and hyena prides moving through the herds.
