Zanzibar — the Spice Island — is one of the Indian Ocean's most magical destinations. A semi-autonomous archipelago off Tanzania's coast, it combines UNESCO-listed Stone Town's labyrinthine Arab and Swahili architecture with pristine white-sand beaches, warm turquoise waters and a unique spice farming culture. Most Tanzania safari itineraries end with a Zanzibar beach extension — the perfect reward after days of wildlife adventures on the mainland.
Zanzibar's historic capital is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a living museum of Swahili, Arab, Indian and colonial influences. Wander narrow streets past carved wooden doors, the Sultan's Palace, the former slave market and the Old Fort. The night food market at Forodhani Gardens is one of East Africa's greatest street-food experiences.
Zanzibar's economy was built on cloves, cinnamon, black pepper and vanilla. A spice farm tour takes you through the fragrant plantations — tasting and smelling over 20 spices — before a traditional Swahili lunch. Combine with Jozani Forest for red colobus monkey viewing, Prison Island for giant Aldabra tortoises, or a sunset dhow cruise along the coast.
June to October and December to February are Zanzibar's prime beach seasons — warm, dry and with calm seas. The two rainy periods (March–May and November) are still warm but less ideal for beach activities. Water temperatures hover around 26–29°C year-round for excellent snorkelling and diving.
